KEY PROJECTS IN 2004 - 2005
 
1. BJD-INDIA WEBSITE
19 December 2004: BJD-INDIA Website www.bjdindia.org launched in New Delhi
Website carries details about various BJD-INDIA: NAN activities, research, patient education, etc.
Results of 3 BJD-INDIA: NAN sponsored research studies posted on the site.
2. RESEARCH
Over 16,000 people surveyed in Jammu, Chennai and Pune during 'The population based multiregional urban survey for RMSD' and over 1500 patients identified. Analysis Report not yet ready.
Ongoing study on Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) - 200 children examined.
5 RESEARCH PROPOSALS on RA, Hip fractures, Osteoporosis, sponsored for the year 2004 - 2005.
'The Late Shri Amrut Mody Unichem - BJD-India Research Fellowship Award 2004' presented to 6 young medical graduates from Nagpur, Mumbai, New Delhi & Pune for their research study on SLE, Spondyloarthropathy, JIA, Fragility Fractures, Meniscal injuries and floating knee in high velocity trauma.
Research Proposals received for BJD-INDIA: NAN sponsorship for the year 2005 - 2006 on prevalence & burden of trauma and spinal injuries in rural population, assessment of clinical & TNF-? response to DMARDS in Spondyloarthropathy, to study BMD in healthy Indian Children and Adolescents.
Till date Rs.40 Lacs received as Research Corpus Funds of which research proposals worth Rs.22 Lacs accepted and under execution with satisfactory progress. Research projects closely monitored by a special BJD-INDIA Committee of experts.

3. BJD SYMPOSIUM / LAUNCH FOR FACULTY
Scientific session on 'Osteoarthritis' conducted by Dr. Arvind Chopra, National Secretary, BJD-INDIA: NAN for general practitioners in Pune on 12 October 2004 - WORLD ARTHRITIS DAY. Attended by 30 medical practitioners.
Symposium on Backache held on 12 October 2004 in Mumbai. Attended by 75 delegates from the Dept of Medicine, Orthopedics, Occupational & Physiotherapy.
BJD Symposium on 'Osteoporosis & Tuberculosis of Musculo-Skeletal System' conducted by Dr. K Mahendranath, Chairman, BJD-INDIA: NAN, Prof. T K Shanmugasundaram, BJD Ambassador and Dr. Rohini Handa, BJD-INDIA: NAN Governing Body member, during the Annual Conference of Indian Rheumatology Association 'IRACON 2004' on 28 Nov 2004 at Chennai (South India). More than 150 rheumatologists attended the Symposium.
BJD endorsed by Academy of Medical Sciences at the Scientific Program on 'OSTEOPOROSIS, OSTEOARTHRITIS AND BEYOND' organised in Nagpur on 26 December 2004.
BJD East India Chapter launched at a SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM held for the first time under the auspices of BJD-INDIA: NAN in Kolkata (East India) on 7 May 2005. Talks on 'Indian Spine', 'Indian Hip', 'Osteoarthritis in India', 'Indian Osteoporosis', 'Ankylosing Spondylitis' delivered by eminent doctors from all over India.
CME on 'OSTEOPOROSIS' organised in Pune by BJD-INDIA: NAN & Pune Orthopedic Association (POA) on 22 May 2005. Well attended by 70 practitioners, mostly orthopaedic surgeons. Key Speaker - Dr. Ambrish Mithal, Endocrinologist.
Other CMEs: (i) Lecture on 'BONE AND JOINT DECADE 2000-2010' presented by Dr. G K Patel, Senior Orthopedic Surgeon and BJD India member at the annual conference of Gujarat Orthopaedic Association in Rajkot (West India) on 5 February 2005. 270 delegates attended this lecture. (ii) CME on 'Arthritis' organised in Jalna on the eve of World Arthritis Day 2004 by Dr. Satish Goyal, Orthopaedic Surgeon, and BJD India member.

4. PUBLICITY
Launch of BJD-INDIA WEBSITE reported by many national and local news papers.
BJD Activity week and public awareness program on arthritis broadcasted by a leading radio station in Pune on the eve of WORLD ARTHRITIS DAY.
BJD Activity Week programs covered by the local papers in Pune, Mumbai and Jalna.
Public awareness program in Madurai received good media coverage.

5 MEMBERSHIP
BJD-INDIA Membership number reaches 168. Members include medical practitioners from various fields - rheumatology, orthopedics, endocrinology, pediatrics, etc.
Liaison officer appointed for West Bengal. BJD-INDIA: NAN now has 6 Liaison officers representing 6 different states of India - Prof. Lata Bichile, Maharashtra (West India); Dr. H K T Raza, Madhya Pradesh (Central India); Dr. G Narsimulu, Andhra Pradesh (South India); Dr. Annil Mahajan, Jammu & Kashmir (North India); Dr. Mathew Varghese, Delhi (North India); and Dr. Alakendu Ghosh, West Bengal (East India).

6. PUBLIC AWARENESS PROGRAMS
Other than the Symposiums held for the medical faculty during the BJD Activity Week 2004, public awareness program organised on 12 October 2004 (WORLD ARTHRITIS DAY) by Center for Rheumatic Diseases (CRD) and Mission Arthritis India (MAI), a patient support group, and one of the founder members of BJD-INDIA: NAN. Program attended by over 550 people. The second issue of MAI health magazine inaugurated by Padmabhushan Dr. K H Sancheti, Senior Orthopedic Surgeon and Executive Committee member of BJD-INDIA: NAN, the Guest of honour for the evening. Magazine distributed free of cost to all. Talks on the 'role of mind in arthritis', 'STR', etc., given by leading medical practitioners and specialists of the city. Patients suffering from severe arthritis felicitated during the program for their courage and determination.
Public Awareness program on Arthritis organised in Madurai (South India) on 28 November 2004. Prof. T K Shanmugasundaram, BJD Ambassador and Former Chairman of BJD-INDIA: NAN, addressed the public. Several questions and other issues related to bone and joint disorders raised by members of the public answered in Tamil (regional language).

7. CAMPS
Medical camp held in village Bhigwan (Pune District), on 16 October 2004. Free check-up provided to over 200 patients.
Free of cost Bone Densitometry check-up camp organised at Jalna on 20 October 2004. 320 patients tested for Bone Mineral Density.

8. AWARENESS THROUGH WEBSITE
BJD-INDIA website www.bjdindia.org linked to www.rheumatologyindia.org for further health information on arthritis.
www.rheumatologyindia.org carries several info letters published by MAI as well as an health booklet containing answers to the several questions asked by patients and others on arthritis.
KEY INTERACTIONS WITH ISC, OTHER NANS, REGIONAL GROUPS, GOVERNMENTS
Dr. Arvind Chopra, National Secretary, BJD-INDIA: NAN, invited to present his data on 'WHO - ILAR COPCORD Bhigwan 1996 - 2005: An overview of its databank, SWOT Analysis and Environmental Scan' at the WHO-ILAR-BJD Workshop in Vienna, Austria, on the Burden and Control of Musculo-Skeletal Conditions in Developing Countries in June 2005.
KEY DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR 2006
Epidemiological information collected from the recently completed population based multiregional survey to be posted soon on the BJD-INDIA website www.bjdindia.org. BJD-INDIA website to be a leading portal for information on rheumatic musculoskeletal disorders in India.
Many more community based research projects to be initiated and sponsored. The urban population based surveys to be extended in Delhi (North India) and Kolkata (East India).
Research based on population surveys is planned to go to South India (Kerala), Gujarat (West India) and Assam (East India).
